Sundal is a healthy, filling and protein packed recipe that works as a snack as well as an added part of a meal. During Navratri, every Indian household prepares their own kind of sundal giving it a unique twist!

Ingredients

    Karamani/Black eyed pea/Lobia – 1 cup

    Water
  • Image
    Salt
  • Image
    Onion – 1 chopped
  • Image
    Green chili – 1 finely chopped
  • Image
    Grated Coconut
  • For Tempering

  • Image
    Oil – 2 Tsp
  • Image
    Urad dal – 1/2 Tsp
  • Image
    Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Image
    Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Image
    Red chili – 2
  • Image
    Hing/Asafetida powder – a pinch
  • Image
    A handful of Curry leaves

Method

  • Image
    Take a cup of black eyes peas in a bowl.
  • Image
    Pour enough water and let the peas soak for about 3 hours.
  • Image
    Now, transfer the peas and water to a presser cooker. Add a little salt and pressure cook it.

    Take a pan and add about two tablespoons of oil.
  • Image
    Add half a tablespoon each of urad dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and then two red chilies, a pinch of asafetida powder (Hing) and a few curry leaves to the pan.

    Sauté the ingredients for a while, then add the chopped onions and a finely chopped green chili.

    Sauté until the onions are transparent in color.

    In the end, mix cooked black eyes peas to this sauté mixture and serve the delicious Black Eyed Peas Sundal hot!
