Kali Urad Dal

Split black Urad dal or Black grams are also known as Black chilka urad dal. These Black urad lentils have been split but not skinned and have creamy white interior. Black urad dal is very delicious in taste and easy and quick to prepare compare to whole black urad. Split black lentils are not as mild as white urad, which have been split and skinned. Like other dals it is nutritious and high in protein. The addition of different kind of tadkas gives this dal a wonderful flavor.

Ingredients

    1/2 cup kali urad dal (split black gram lentil)

    2-3 tbsp chana dal
  • Image
    2 tsp green chili – garlic paste
  • Image
    1 tsp ginger paste
  • Image
    1 tsp red chili powder
  • Image
    Small or half chopped onion
  • Image
    1/4 tsp haldi powder (turmeric powder)
  • Image
    1 tsp Jeera (cumin seeds)
  • Image
    Namak (Salt)
  • Image
    1tsp Dhania powder (coriander powder)
  • Image
    2-3 cloves
  • Image
    3-4 black pepper
  • Image
    tej patta (bay leaf)

    cinnamon

    2-3 tbsp oil for frying

Method

    Add urad dal in a pressure cooker.
  • Image
    Also add some salt, turmeric powder and chili- garlic paste.
  • Image
    Once boiled, dal (lentil) is ready for frying.

    In a pan heat some oil once heated, add some cumin seeds, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon and tej patta

    Now add ginger paste and green chili – garlic paste.

    Now add some chopped onion and keep frying.

    Add coriander powder, chili powder, salt and turmeric powder. keep stirring
  • Image
    Add little water if the gravy is too dry. Once the gravy is ready, add boiled dal. Stir well and add some water, boil well

    Urad Dal is ready to serve
